Tesla: What Tesla’s Stock Split Does And Does Not Signal

What Tesla’s Stock Split Does And Does Not Signal

Today, Tesla TSLA -0.9% stock traded for the first time since splitting 5-for-1 last Friday. The company’s shares rose by $55.64, a 12.6% increase, to $498.32, taking the company’s market capitalization to a record high.

Tesla announced the stock split on August 11, and since that date its shares have increased by 81%, while in contrast the S&P 500 increased by 5%.

What Tesla’s Stock Split Does And Does Not Signal

To place Tesla’s stock split into context, with a view to sorting out what Tesla’s stock split signals, and for that matter does not signal, consider some key insights from behavioral finance.

In contrast to the approach in traditional finance, which emphasizes that stock splits are essentially cosmetic changes with no major financial impacts, behavioral research has documented that stock splits tend to feature real subsequent effects.

The shares of the typical firm that engages in a stock split, but not a reverse split, are associated with a positive abnormal return of about 8% over a twelve month period following the split.1

What is really interesting is that companies which choose to split their stocks tend to find themselves the objects of pessimistic earnings forecasts by analysts. Just over a month ago, Tesla surprised analysts when it announced second quarter GAAP earnings per share of 50 cents compared to analysts’ consensus forecast of a $1.06 loss. Tesla also surprised analysts in respect to revenues and free cash flow.

The general finding from behavioral finance research is that companies which announce stock splits tend to be much less likely to experience declines in future earnings than companies with comparable market capitalizations and price-to-book ratios.

In a nutshell, the behavioral approach indicates that if we take the outside view of Tesla, meaning that we focus on the reference class to which Tesla belongs, then by splitting its stock, the company is signaling that it is confident that it will be able to deliver future earnings that do not decline.

What Tesla’s stock split does not signal is that its shares are fairly priced relative to fundamentals. Analysts at Morgan Stanley and JP Morgan have been communicating to investors for more than five years target prices that correspond to fundamental values. The reports from the end of last month, from both analyst teams, agree on one thing. Tesla’s market value lies above its fundamental value.

Tesla Stock Split 2020: What You Need to Know

On July 28, 2020, Tesla’s stock was trading at $1,476. At that time, Morgan Stanley analysts established a twelve month target price of $1,050 for Tesla, based entirely on a discounted cash flow valuation. One week earlier, JP Morgan analysts established a fundamental value for Tesla’s stock of $295 per share, which they related to a target price of $325 for the end of December 2020.

Although both analyst teams agreed that Tesla’s stock was overvalued, they clearly had very different views about its fundamental value. In this, they were not alone. Post stock split, the range of target prices for analysts covering Tesla is $17.40 to $500, with the median target price being $295. Remember, Tesla’s August 30 closing price was $498!

Few analysts use discounted cash flow to arrive at their target prices. Even JP Morgan’s analysts set a target price for Tesla above their estimate for fundamental value. This is in line with the behavioral approach which posits that because of sentiment, market prices and fundamental values can part company for long periods of time, with the gap between the two being large and plausibly widening before narrowing. In this regard, it is worth noting that according to Morgan Stanley’s valuation framework, 75% of Tesla’s fundamental value derives from Tesla’s free cash flow stream after 2030. New information about what is likely to occur after 2030 is scant relative to the volatility in Tesla’s current market price.

Gaps between market prices and fundamental values can be especially wide for stocks that feature high sentiment betas. Sentiment beta reflects sensitivity to general market sentiment in the same way that traditional beta reflects sensitivity to the return on the market.

Here’s what it will take for Tesla’s stock to recover from the coronavirus selloff

One of the most important features of stocks that feature high sentiment beta is that these stocks are highly volatile, are difficult to value, are difficult to arbitrage, and are associated with companies that are young and while currently low in profitability have great profit potential. Not surprisingly, Tesla’s stock qualifies as featuring high sentiment beta.

Short selling high sentiment beta stocks is risky business, even when these stocks appear to be wildly overvalued on fundamentals. This is one of the main lessons I communicated to investors in my book Beyond Greed and Fear: Understanding Behavioral Finance and the Psychology of Investing, published two decades ago. That lesson has not changed; however, for psychological reasons, many investors seem to need to learn that lesson the hard way.

Alleged Amber Heard, Cara Delevingne and Elon Musk sex fest has fans fuming: 'All this as she gaslit Johnny Depp'

Alleged Amber Heard, Cara Delevingne and Elon Musk sex fest has fans fuming: 'All this as she gaslit Johnny Depp'

In an explosive revelation, supermodel Cara Delevingne's name has been linked to Amber Heard and Elon Musk after she was dragged into Johnny Depp's $50 million defamation suit over a 'three-way affair'. As per a Daily Mail report, the A-list trio hooked up at Depp's downtown LA penthouse in late 2016 after Heard's split from Depp, according to a friend and former neighbor.

The report also claims that Depp "hasn't ruled out" serving the 27-year-old model with a subpoena if it helps his case against ex-wife Heard, 34. "Cara could also be compelled to give evidence — by either party," an insider confirmed. "It's definitely a possibility. Almost anything can happen in this case." Depp's lawyers have taken depositions from friends and close ones, along with Josh Drew — the ex-husband of Raquel “Rocky” Pennington, Heard’s best friend.

According to Daily Mail, when attorney Benjamin Chew asked, "Did she ever tell you in words or substance while Amber was still married to Johnny Depp that the three of them, Amber Heard, Elon Musk and Carla Delevingne spent the night together?" and Drew replied, "Yes," adding, "To the specific date, I can't say."

While Drew claims that the affair took place while Heard and Depp were still married, Musk contended that he started dating Heard only after her separation. However, Depp has another story to tell. As per the same report, the 57-year-old 'Fantastic Beasts' actor said that the building staff suggested Musk visited Heard “late at night” while Depp was abroad filming 'Pirates of the Caribbean' in 2015.

The shocking news has sparked fury on the Internet. "⁦@elonmusk⁩ like I said, you’re a piece of s**t racist. Treat women like Trump. Who molested. ⁦@IvankaTrump. Stay classy Musky," one tweet read and another said, "Never ever really cared for or even liked Amber Heard, she’s a terrible actress & that’s only to begin with, could care less about Musk, but now that has me questioning Cara Delevingne!!" Another went on to say: "A goofy-looking nerd like Elon Musk had a threesome with Amber Heard and Cara Delevingne? Good Lord, can somebody please make me a billionaire."

One wrote: "All this while Amber Heard gaslit Johnny Depp saying he was paranoid and crazy for believing she was cheating on him. She made him doubt himself. She knew what she was doing to him." And another said, "The 'claim' is not from Johnny. It's a statement in a deposition given by Amber Heard's best friend's husband for court. It's a nightmare, just like everything else about this. Try kindness."

Calling it "crazy", one wrote, "#AmberHeard had a threesome w #CaraDelevingne and #ElonMusk while married to #JohnnyDepp. All this as per Amber Heard's best friend's ex-husband in the divorce of Depp where he has been accused of abuse. Bomboclaaaaat this is crazy," and another said, "Speaking of #AmberHeard and #CaraDelevingne bizarre affair, just a reminder of how she split the Gala 'due to an emergency', and Cara accepted the (paid for!!) Award and quickly followed. Brandon called it 'what a weekend'."

Daily Mail also shared an image of a woman closely resembling Delevingne in an elevator shot to Depp's penthouse in late 2016. However, a source close to Musk brushed off the reports of the three-way relationship as "a nonsense, a soap opera." The spokesman reiterated the statement from 2019 which said, "Elon and Amber didn't start seeing each other until May 2016, and even then it was infrequent," and added, "Their relationship didn't become romantic until some time later." Delevingne, who is openly bisexual, was often seen hanging out and frequently partying with Heard, who also makes no secret of her attraction to both the sexes.

Elon Musk says Starship is SpaceX's 'top priority' from now on

Now that SpaceX has succeeded in sending two astronauts to the ISS via its Crew Dragon spacecraft, the teams can devote themselves body and soul to another major project, that of the Starship rocket, the new top priority for Elon Musk.

Starship-SpaceX

Don't count on SpaceX to draw attention back to Crew Dragon now that the first manned launch has been successfully completed.

The project will now proceed normally, launches will follow one another - Thomas Pesquet should join the ISS before the end of the year aboard this spacecraft - but the teams will be working hard on another titanic project: the Starship rocket.

SpaceX now gives priority to its Starship rocket

It is in an email from Elon Musk obtained by CNBC that we learn that all SpaceX employees must now treat Starship as "SpaceX's top priority project".

The CEO urges everyone to speed things up as much as possible. The only other acceptable concern currently in the company will be to "reduce the risks of Dragon's return". This has the merit of being clear, Elon Musk wants to shift up a gear on the design of this huge rocket.

Not to mention getting the Dragon Crew spacecraft into regular service

Starship is to become the main rocket of SpaceX. Not only will it have enough power for space tourism and long-distance travel, but it will also be a truly reusable rocket with very short time delays between missions, making space travel much more accessible. This rocket certainly represents the future of the company.

Unfortunately, the various failures around the project have clearly impacted its ambitions in more or less long term. If this email is true, it would obviously not mean that SpaceX will neglect its other projects.

The Crew Dragon capsule has indeed transported two astronauts to the International Space Station but it still needs to enter regular service. One thing is sure, the priority now is the Starship rocket.

Starlink: Elon Musk's satellite network will be fast enough

SpaceX's Starlink satellite broadband will have latency low enough to support competitive online gaming and will generally be fast enough that customers won't have to think about Internet speed, Elon Musk said at a conference yesterday.

The Space X boss promises to offer low latency with its giant constellation. The service will be aimed primarily at rural areas.

Starlink: Elon Musk's Satellite Network Will be Fast Enough for Competitive Gaming

Elon Musk said yesterday that the Internet access offered by his Starlink constellation will be characterized by its low latency of fewer than 20 milliseconds.

This will allow users to participate in video game competitions.

"It will be a pretty good experience because it'll be very low latency," Musk said in a Q&A session at the Satellite 2020 conference (see video).

"We're targeting latency below 20 milliseconds, so somebody could play a fast-response video game at a competitive level like that's the threshold for the latency."

The latency of less than 20ms would make Starlink comparable to wired broadband service. When SpaceX first began talking about its satellite plans in late 2016, it said latency would be 25ms to 35ms.

But Musk has been predicting sub-20ms latency since at least May 2019, with the potential for sub-10ms latency sometime in the future.

No competition with telecoms operators

This promise was made by the Space X boss at the Satellite 2020 conference taking place this week in Washington.

However, he said his service would be more suited to rural areas than to urban centers where there will be less bandwidth available.

Elon Musk concludes that it will not compete with the big telecom operators.

He sees Starlink as a complementary way to connect the low-density US campaigns that are the most difficult to cover.

SpaceX could launch up to 30,000 Starlink satellites...

Elon Musk's space company has completed a launch authorization document for an additional 30,000 satellites for its Starlink constellation. This could bring the mesh size to 42,000 satellites in low orbit.

To be able to launch an additional 30,000 satellites, this is what SpaceX has asked the International Telecommunication Union, the competent authority in this area.

Elon Musk's space company, which had already received authorization in November 2018 to launch 12,000 satellites dedicated to covering the earth with an internet connection.

The Starlink project could thus have up to 42 000 satellites

A strict condition: SpaceX is not obliged to launch all these satellites - there are however minimum launch rules - but sees broad scope for its network, whose goal is to provide a low-latency gigabit internet connection to all the populations of the planet.

SpaceX has already launched the first 60 satellites into a low orbit of between 1150 and 1325 kilometers.

The demand for the 30,000 new units is for an even lower orbit: between 328 and 580 kilometers.

While the first launch authorization for the 12,000 satellites had already raised criticism, in particular, because of the impact this could have on the amount of space debris, it is likely that the alarm bell will be rung again for these new units.

It must be said that the space agencies are already tearing their hair out with just under 9,000 satellites in orbit. So with 42,000 more...

Elon Musk says Starlink won’t ruin astronomy

Musk addressed Starlink's potential impact on astronomy, as astronomers have complained about SpaceX satellites interfering with astronomical observations.

"I am confident that we will not cause any impact whatsoever in astronomical discoveries. Zero. That's my prediction. We'll take corrective action if it's above zero," Musk said.

That doesn't mean Starlink satellites aren't visible shortly after they're launched. Musk said:

People get a little excited because when the satellites are first launched, they're tumbling a little bit so they're kind of like, they're gonna blink.

And because they haven't stabilized, they're raising their orbits, they're lower than you'd expect, and they're kind of naturally going to reflect in ways that are not the case when they're on orbit.

But now that the satellites are on orbit, I'd be impressed if somebody can actually tell me where all of them are.

I have not met someone who can tell me where all of them are, not even one person, so it can't be that big of a deal.
