     Ford announces an impressive racing model, the Cobra Jet. Reserved for drag races, it takes full advantage of the capabilities of a supercharged electric motor.

     Electrification is spreading everywhere. Even in places with high-performance internal combustion engines, we will see, one day or another, a move towards environmentally-friendly vehicles.

     Ford is paving the way with the unveiling of the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1,400 100% electric prototype. For some, this is pure heresy, but in reality, we realize that a 100% electric engine can be extremely powerful.

     Another piece of good news, considering that you only drive a little more than a quarter-mile, because you need a long-range!

     The figures speak for themselves for those who are in doubt about the performance of this engine: ¼ of miles under 8 seconds and a top speed of 274 km/h.



     It must be said that the technology presented by Ford isn't a piece of cake. This monster of acceleration delivers 1,400 horsepower and 1,100 lb-ft of torque.

     Of course, everything goes directly and strictly on the rear wheels. Ford wouldn't have gone so far as to make it all-wheel drive.

     While we're amazed by this power, Ford keeps a reserve in terms of the technology used as well as the type and size of the battery. As for range, frankly, it doesn't matter.

     For Mark Rushbrook, director of Ford Performance Motorsports, this is undeniably an exciting project: "We saw the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 project as an opportunity to start developing 100% electric engines in an existing package in which we have a lot of experience.

     We had the performance standards that we had to meet or exceed. He goes further, adding that he hopes other projects will come on the table: "It was a fantastic project we worked on.

     We hope this is just the first of many to come for the Ford Performance Motorsports team.

     Although Ford has some experience with electrification, in the specific case of this project, the American manufacturer called on other companies with expertise in this area.

     In the batch, we count on MLe Racecars, Watson Engineering, AEM EV, and Cascadia.

     In short, the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 is really exciting. However, for the moment, it's only a prototype; Ford isn't yet offering it to its customers who love acceleration racing.

MOVING FORWARD SAFELY

     No matter what happens: the BMW i8 Roadster is ready to deal with them thanks to a comprehensive range of assistance systems. 

     On wet surfaces, for example, the "dry brakes" function cleans the brake discs at regular intervals to minimize moisture. This is done without any noticeable braking of the vehicle.

     With Citroën Ami, the PSA Group is clearly targeting schoolchildren, high school students and other urban and suburban people with only short daily commutes who might be attracted to a two-wheeler.

     BMW has unveiled the third generation of the pioneer of a unique and innovative segment: the Sports Activity Coupé (SAC), the new BMW X6 combines the agility and versatility of a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) with the racy elegance of a coupé. 

     The new model adopts an exclusive design language. It also boasts a state-of-the-art engine and chassis, while at the same time offering numerous innovations for a unique driving experience at the crossroads of sportiness and luxury. 

     The new BMW X6 is available in three trim levels: Heritage, xLine, and M-Pack. In terms of engines, the X6 30d, X6 40i, X6 M50d, X6 M50i, and the radical X6 M are currently available.

Larger, more comfortable, more spacious

     Compared to the previous generation, the new BMW X6 is 26 mm (4,935 mm) longer and 15 mm (2,004 mm) wider. 

     Lowered by 6 mm (1,696 mm), it benefits from particularly dynamic proportions and looks more athletic than ever. The wheelbase increases by 42 mm (2,975 mm).

     The bow is dominated by BMW's generous double grille. For the first time, the new BMW X6 can optionally be equipped with the illuminated BMW double radiator grille, which adds an extra touch of elegance to the exterior design. 

     The illumination of the radiator grille is activated when the car is locked and unlocked. The driver can also activate it manually at will. The dual grille illumination function is also available while driving.

     With the optional BMW laser headlamps with adaptive LED lighting, the BMW X6 benefits from selective beam headlamps with an anti-glare high beam function and an increased range of around 500 m. 


     Visually, the BMW Laser Headlamps are distinguished by the blue X-shaped elements inside the characteristic BMW twin headlamps. The xLine and M Sport finishes, which are distinguished by distinctive styling signatures, are also available.

Interior: an exclusive atmosphere with a sporty feel

Four powerful engines, two M Performance variants

     The new BMW X6 is available in four engine variants: two petrol engines and two latest-generation diesel engines. 

     With its newly developed 530 hp petrol V8 engine, the BMW X6 M50i (fuel consumption combined: 11.5 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 263 g/km) is already the flagship of the new generation. 

     The BMW X6 M50d (fuel consumption combined: 7.2 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 191 g/km) is equipped with a 400 hp in-line six-cylinder diesel engine with four turbochargers.

     The BMW X6 xDrive 40i (fuel consumption combined: 9.0 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 206 g/km) has an in-line six-cylinder petrol engine with 340 hp, while the BMW X6 xDrive 30d (fuel consumption combined: 6.6 - 6.1 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 180 g/km) has an in-line six-cylinder diesel engine with 265 hp. 


     The M Sport exhaust system is standard on both M models and is available as an option for the other versions of the BMW X6 and is also included in the M Sport trim level. 

     This exhaust system gives the BMW X6 a unique, emotionally rich sound.

The BMW X6 with M engine and the hybrid version

     The "flagship" of the series was the BMW X6 M. BMW's tuning specialists used the V8 engine for the M model and achieved a performance of 408 kW (555 hp) from the bi-turbo. 

     With this, the BMW X6 was able to go from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds. For comparison: with the smallest petrol engine, the BMW X6 sprinted in 6.7 seconds.

     However, the Bavarians didn't just equip their X6 with a sports engine for improved performance. For better environmental values, the hybrid version of the BMW X6, also on the road with a V8 aggregate, was designed. 


     The spark-ignition engine was assisted by two electric motors, which provided the propulsion alone for low speeds.

     Unmistakable: The BMW X6 M demonstrates superior dynamic qualities, expressive M design and unrivalled agility. 

     Convincing by its unique combination of power, comfort and efficiency. The BMW X6 M with intelligent M xDrive all-wheel-drive impresses with its sumptuous interior design and dynamics straight from motorsport. 

     The BMW X6 M: fuel consumption combined: 12.5 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 285 g/km. It is powered by a newly developed 600 hp V8 petrol engine.

     Each variant of the new BMW X6 is equipped with an eight-speed Steptronic gearbox and the latest generation of the BMW xDrive system, which optimises the driveability, agility and directional stability of the vehicle. 

     The new generation of this intelligent all-wheel-drive system adjusts the torque between the front and rear axles according to the driving situation with even greater precision and responsiveness.

     In cases where all-wheel drive is not required, full power can be transmitted to the rear wheels to optimize vehicle efficiency. 

     In particularly dynamic driving situations, the xDrive system's power distribution favours rear-wheel drive. 


     The electronically controlled M Sport limited-slip differential with electronic rear-wheel drive is available in the M Sport trim level and in conjunction with the optional xOffroad package and provides additional sporty driving dynamics.

Optimised chassis settings for sportiness, comfort and off-road driving

     This new model from the Bavarian manufacturer has a double-wishbone front axle and a five-link rear axle, an ideal suspension for outstanding sportiness and comfort on the road, but also outstanding off-road traction. 

     The new model is equipped with Dynamic Damping Control as standard. 

     SelectDrive M Pro suspension with Active Roll Stabilization and ActiveDrive 4-wheel steering gives the car exceptional agility and driving dynamics.


     At the touch of a button, the driver can also select the appropriate settings for ground clearance, xDrive, acceleration curve, transmission management and DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) corrective actions.

Innovative support systems with new features

     The new BMW X6 is a particularly innovative sports activity coupé with a wide range of standard and optional assistance systems. 

     The individual systems also benefit from a large number of new features for optimising comfort and safety. 

     For example, the new BMW X6 is equipped as standard with cruise control with braking function and collision warning with Pedestrian Detection System and automatic low-speed braking, which also detects cyclists.

     Active cruise control with Stop & Go function is available as an option. 

     Also available as an option, the comprehensive Drive-Assist Pro range of comfort and safety systems includes the steering and lane control assistant with traffic jam autopilot, lane-keeping assistant with side collision protection, avoidance assistant, rear collision warning, override warning, cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning and emergency stop assistant.


     The innovative Auto-Reverse Assist, which helps the driver to exit parking spaces and manoeuvre in tight spaces, is a testament to the progress made in empowering the driver.

      Audi revealed, as expected, its e Tron electric SUV Sportback. A four-door coupe with a charming look marked by an octagonal grille with horizontal slats, a muscular body and a roofline that drops "abruptly to the rear" of the vehicle. 

     In short, this zero-emission vehicle has a lot to offer from a purely aesthetic standpoint.

     This SUV has a 60-liter front trunk and a total luggage capacity of 615 liters. The vehicle also features 20-inch wheels, sport-tuned air suspension, and optional virtual outside mirrors.

EMPHASIS ON AERODYNAMICS

     The firm from across the Rhine insists on the presence of Matrix LED digital headlights, a high-end technology present from the first level of finish. 

     The press release published by the German group states: Their light is broken down into tiny pixels and illuminates the road in high resolution. 

     The German group also praises the aerodynamics of its product, which has a direct impact on range.

"Approximately 10 kilometers of this increased range compared to the e-Tron can be attributed to the vehicle body, the more favorable aerodynamics," says Audi


     The range, in fact, is 446 kilometers according to the WLTP approval cycle, thanks to a battery with 95 kWh of gross energy (86.5 kWh of net energy).

     On the power side, the double asynchronous electric motor has a total power of 265 kW (360 hp) and a torque of 561 Nm. 

     The result: the e-Tron Sportback is capable of reaching top speeds of 200 km/h and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.6 seconds, or 5.7 thanks to a "boost" mode that is active for just eight seconds. 

     All these figures are to the credit of the most powerful of the versions, the 55 Quattro.

     The second version, soberly called 50 Quattro, has a power output of 230 kW (313 hp) and a torque of 540 Nm. 

     Maximum speed: 190 km/h. Acceleration time: 6.8 seconds. Its battery provides 71 kWh of gross energy (64.7 kWh of net energy), giving it a shorter range of 347 kilometers. 

This is a relatively short range for a station wagon that is normally designed to cover medium and long distances.

TRIPLE SCREEN

     At the dawn of the 2020 vintage, Audi logically plays the card of modernity and connectivity. 


     Its teams have thus implemented the "MMI touch response" operating system within its double screen located between the driver and the front passenger. "When the finger actuates a function, a haptic and acoustic confirmation is triggered," he explains.

     The passenger compartment is equipped with a 12.1-inch touch screen at the top to "control infotainment, telephony, navigation, and dedicated e-Tron settings", while the lower 8.6-inch screen "allows text entry and management of comfort functions and temperature control". 


     A third 12.3-inch screen (1920 x 720-pixel resolution) as a digital instrument panel invites itself in front of the driver.

     To top it all off, Alexa Voice Assistant will give users the opportunity to manage certain features with their voice alone. "The service provides access to more than 80,000 Alexa commands," Audi said.

CHEAPER COMPETITION

     In addition to its compatibility with the e-Tron Charging Service, which provides "access to almost 120,000 public charging points in 21 European countries", this zero-emission SUV can be charged on direct current up to 150 kW (120 kW for the 50 Quattro version). 

     This means that 80% of energy can be recovered within 30 minutes. Alternatively, the 11 kW alternating current public stations can be used.

     Finally, the final offer consists of thirteen body tents, a limited edition "edition one" (plasma blue color) and a basic version available for pre-order at the end of November 2019, before deliveries start in spring 2020. 


The press release indicates German prices: 71,350 euros. This is an onerous cost compared to its future competitors: the Tesla Model Y and the Ford Mustang Mach E, for example, will cost 58,000 and 48,990 euros, respectively.

     Driving assistance, autonomous piloting systems, 100% autonomous cars... What is behind these terms and what are the different levels of autonomy?

     Today, virtually all mobility stakeholders, and many more, have focused on autonomous vehicles.

     Tesla, the PSA group, Renault, Google Waymo, Mercedes, Uber, Volvo... all are working on car autonomy, even if some car manufacturers have had to revise their roadmaps recently and redirect research and investment funds in this area to other sectors, such as energy transition.

     Legislation has never really been very clear on autonomous vehicles. There was often confusion between autopilot and autonomous piloting. 


    Autopilot is still a very advanced driver assistance system, but it cannot do without a human driver. The opposite is true of autonomous driving, which must be able to do without a human presence.

Defining what human drivers and autonomous systems can and cannot do

     In 2014, SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) International, a professional organization of scientists and engineers, proposed a grid for understanding and classifying autonomous vehicles.

     This grid is the basis for the classification into categories, defining what human drivers and autonomous systems can and cannot do.

     It also serves as a reference for manufacturers and governments who regularly address the various issues related to the mobilities of the future, mobilities that are sometimes directly related to autonomous systems.


     The International Organisation of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA) has also defined a European scale with six levels of vehicle autonomy, a system similar to the one designed by the SAE.

LEVEL 0: NO AUTONOMY OR ASSISTANCE

     As the name implies, it is the zero level of autonomy and assistance. 


     Understand that the entire driving part is done by the driver, without any help from the car. Here, there is no cruise control, no automatic emergency braking or even lane-keeping assistance.

     The small light indicating an engine defect or a fault in your engine oil level cannot be considered as assistance but as a warning of danger.

LEVEL 1: AUTOMATION OF CERTAIN FUNCTIONS

     This is generally what we find on the majority of our cars today. 

The driver is obviously present 100% of the time and the car is not supposed to make any decisions "alone". Among these aids, we can mention cruise control or automatic emergency braking.

     We can also take as an example assistances that seem "normal" today, such as the anti-lock braking system (ABS) or the programmed electro-stabilizer (ESP), two assistances that are now mandatory for all new cars.

LEVEL 2: AUTOMATION OF COMBINED FUNCTIONS

     This is the level that tends to be democratized on all our modern cars. 

     Even if the legislator does not allow it, which is why cars regularly tell you to put your hands on the steering wheel when you don't, you can theoretically let go of the controls for a few seconds and let the car do its work. 


     Of course, the driver must keep an eye on his environment so that he can quickly regain control if a problem occurs.

     Level 2 allows the car to manage acceleration and braking, for example with adaptive cruise control. 

     This is combined with lane-keeping and tracking, as is the case with a Mercedes-Benz EQC or an Audi e-Tron, for example. 


     The car knows how to move on its own, but is not aware of the entire environment around it. Other functions include the famous "Park Assist", which is now present in many vehicles and allows the car to park by itself.

LEVEL 3: LIMITED AUTONOMOUS DRIVING

     That's where we can really start talking about an autonomous vehicle. 

     Cars are able to read and analyze their environment, allowing them to take actions according to their evolution. 


     Level 3 indicates that the driver must be able to regain control of the vehicle at any time, but that the car is perfectly autonomous under certain conditions, on motorways for example.

     Today, some production cars oscillate between levels 2 and 3. This is notably the case of Tesla, which, just a few years ago, offered a very convincing automatic driving system, but today unfortunately constrained by the legislator's standards that force the brand to revise its copy. 

     Nevertheless, at Tesla, the car uses cameras and radars to understand its environment and apprehend the dangers. 

     It can accelerate if you activate your blinker to overtake, decelerate to maintain safe distances while keeping an eye on other road users.

     At the moment, due to legislation, Tesla's are still below level 2 range, but they do check a few boxes on level 3. The Californian company claims to be ready when level 3 of autonomy is legalized and democratized.


LEVEL 4: ALMOST COMPLETE AUTONOMY

     The vehicle performs the entire driving task completely autonomously, i.e. without even the necessary presence of a driver on board. 

     The system is responsible for all the actions that it will perform, in particular concerning maneuvers or its decisions according to the evolution of the environment.

     On motorways, the vehicle must be able, for example, to exit the motorway and stop alone at a rest area. We can also take the example of the "City Park Full Automatic" feature, which allows the vehicle to park in a line or in a battle without a driver.

LEVEL 5: FULL AUTONOMY

     The vehicle combines absolutely all driving tasks and is not subject to any human intervention. Whether it is on the motorway or in the city center, it is capable of driving in total autonomy. 

     All the big companies are working on this, like Google for example and its famous Google Car, or Uber. There is not even a steering wheel anymore, it is the car that makes all the right decisions without human intervention. 


     If it wants to, it can even ignore a human order if artificial intelligence thinks it is dangerous.

WHEN WILL 100% AUTONOMOUS CARS ARRIVE?

     Certainly not for tomorrow, as we read all over the place a few years ago. 

     While manufacturers are generally well advanced in this respect, it is the legislator who will have the last word. There are still a lot of parameters to be taken into account, and the range of a vehicle depends not only on the vehicle itself but also on the surrounding environment. 

     For example, cities will also have to be connected in order to smooth traffic flow or to send information to autonomous vehicles.

     We have also recently noted a slight decline in interest from car manufacturers in vehicle autonomy, especially since some short-term issues are more important, such as those related to the energy transition. 

     The budget dedicated to research and development of autonomous cars has had to be cut in some cases and transferred to other sectors, such as electric powertrains or batteries.

     Some manufacturers are also delegating these activities to companies specializing in new technologies.


     This is the case of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, which has joined forces with Waymo, a company owned by Google, to assess market opportunities and to work together to provide a commercial, legal and regulatory framework for autonomous automobiles in France and Japan.

     Determined to shake up the Renault Captur, Ford resurrects the Ford Puma 2020. The most feline of its vehicles, which returns in the form of a compact SUV. To achieve its goal, the American is counting on a weighty argument: hybridization.

   

     At Ford, the electric turn begins with a wink to the past. The first of the 14 electrified vehicles that the manufacturer will launch this year is an "old lion". 

     Indeed, the first Puma of the name had seen its history come to an end in 2002. Its successor has very little to do with the coupe of the 1990s. It's a compact and stylish SUV that inaugurates the mild-hybrid (mHEV) engine at Ford.

     On the outside, the Ford Puma is quite successful. Its length would tend to place it in the middle of its class. In terms of width, however, it's one of the most imposing. 

     These dimensions give it a rather massive look, which is counterbalanced by very fluid lines in a design that sometimes reminds us of the Mustang Mach-E, the 100% electric SUV introduced at the end of last year.

     In fact, it is from the Fiesta that the Puma borrows its base, which is not without impact on the future potential of the Puma. 

     Although the mild-hybrid engines will soon be joined by more classic versions (petrol and diesel), the compact SUV will not be able to evolve into a 100% electric version.

     Inside, Ford is returning to the (good) habits initiated with its latest Focus, namely integrating numerous driving aids and a nice compendium of standard technologies. 


     The dashboard is relatively uncluttered, with an 8-inch touch screen in the middle. The digital instrumentation is, for once, slightly customizable. 

     The entire package runs on Ford Sync 3.4, one of the most intuitive and user-friendly onboard OSes on the market. And even if it's not to your liking, the American is one of the least restrictive manufacturers when it comes to switching to CarPlay or Android Auto. 

     On this point, the presence of a second USB port on the dashboard would have been nice, but the Puma is content with a single port placed above a vertical induction charging zone. 

     On the other hand, it's the passengers in the back that benefit from this second USB port, which again, is not so usual for such an affordable car.

     Finally, in addition to traditional signal recognition, adaptive cruise control and other lane refocusing features, Ford is equipping its compact SUV with "Local Hazard" technology. 

     This is a vehicle-to-vehicle communication system that alerts drivers to traffic conditions or potential hazards on the road. 

     In fact, all vehicles equipped with a modem and members of a partnership with Here report this data, but at Ford, the Puma is the first that does more than just provide information. It is also able to display it and warn its driver.

     The main novelty of this Puma and probably one of its best selling points is to be found under the hood, or rather under the seats. 

     It's a small hybrid engine coupled with a reduced battery supplied by LG. This duo allows Ford to offer the mild-Hybrid on its SUV, i.e. a light hybridization that essentially acts on the acceleration phases and would allow lower fuel consumption. 

     The promise of the mild-hybrid is actually twofold. This electrification, even if very light, would indeed make it possible to reduce the bill on daily journeys. 

     For Ford, this saving is significant since the manufacturer has announced a fuel consumption gain of up to 10% on its 125 hp model and up to 15% for the 155 PS version. 

     In reality, the figures put forward by the manufacturer seem very ambitious. Even with a smooth ride and in eco-mode, we didn't manage to get below the 6L/100 km expected. 

     In reality, with mixed driving, by oscillating between the different driving modes, our consumption varied between 6 and 7 l/100, which is certainly very correct but below the expectations allowed by the mild-hybrid.

Megabox: mega argument?

     The Puma's other big argument isn't technological, it seems down to earth, but it's still quite relevant since it concerns space. 

     Ford's compact SUV offers the largest trunk in the segment with a volume of 456 liters. This abundance of space is made possible thanks to a little trick the automaker has its own trick that we should see regularly on its upcoming models, namely the "Megabox". 

     This is additional space under the trunk, made possible by the absence of a spare tire, which increases the initial trunk capacity by 54 L. 

     The additional advantage is that Ford has equipped this box with an emptying hatch that allows it to be filled with water, among other things. Handy when you want to clean your muddy sneakers or if you want to secretly raise a school of goldfish. 

     Please note, however, that not all Puma buyers will benefit from this 456 L capacity. 

     Indeed, while developing its SUV, Ford realized that the battery/engine block placed near the Megabox could be moved under the passenger seat, thus offering additional space. 

     As a result, the first models leaving the factory, probably until June, will see their trunk reduced to 402 L, while the following ones will be equipped with a larger Megabox and thus 456 L of storage space. 

 How's it look on the road?

     The ST-Line X with 155 hp and the Titanium with 125 hp. The sporty version mounted on 19-inch wheels is certainly more dynamic, but also a little stiffer, with its 18-inch Titanium equivalent giving priority to driving comfort over everything else. 

     Even though the Puma is still very pleasant to drive overall, you have to make use of the available driving modes to really enjoy its versatility.

     A relatively misplaced "Drive Mode" button near the handbrake allows you to change the car's settings. You have to press it several times to switch from one mode to another, Ford offering five different ones.

     In reality, only the "eco" and "sport" modes seemed really relevant to us. The former reduces the Puma's performance to increase fuel consumption, the latter does exactly the opposite and gives priority to the driving sensations, with quite a bit of success. 

     In the end, the normal mode seemed quite soft to us and it's quite logical when you know that it's the one that benefits the least from the car's hybridization.

Verdict


     The Ford Puma is a real nice surprise. Pleasing to the eye, pleasant to drive and full of good ideas, starting with this Megabox that considerably increases its trunk capacity.

     What's more, its hybrid powertrain is a real advantage that doesn't imply any extra cost or even allows you to make some savings. 

     In any case, it is undoubtedly one of the most serious competitors of the segment's top performer, the Renault Captur... at least as long as it is not offered in an E-Tech hybrid version. 

     This is undoubtedly Ford's success: to have managed to market one of the most successful vehicles in its category, at an attractive price (from 22,900 euros). 

     This desire to make the hybrid "affordable" still lacks a little panache. Because if hybridization exists, the mild-hybrid is by far the least efficient and the least ambitious from an ecological point of view.
