Netgear Promises 5G technology and Wi-Fi 6 to Connected Nomads with New Mobile Router

Combining the two latest wireless connection technologies, 5G network, and Wi-Fi, the Nighthawk M5 has everything to appeal to nomadic users who want to stay connected on the go without discomfort.

Netgear is expanding its Nighthawk M range and providing nomadic Internet users (or those without fixed broadband Internet access) with a new reason to rejoice. Here's the new version, simply named Nighthawk M5.

Like its predecessor, it's still a stand-alone router - it even works away from a power outlet thanks to a rechargeable battery.

Netgear doesn't provide technical details about it, however, the M1's battery was 5040 mAh and had lasted 28h19 in 4G video streaming... Let's hope the M5 will do as well on this point.

5G speed

Where the Nighthawk M5 should do better is on the network side. It sticks to the times and now offers to share a 5G connection (theoretically offering speeds up to 4 Gbps, not just 4G - Category 22), all with Wi-Fi 6!

The theoretical speeds announced for the local wireless part are 1.2 Gbit/s, which is very honest for a box that measures only 10.5 cm wide by 2.15 cm thick, and weighs only 240g, battery included.

Wi-Fi 6 allows Netgear to report up to four times the performance of Wi-Fi 5, and it should be possible to connect up to 32 devices simultaneously to the Nighthawk M5.

The network speeds, coverage, and stability should enable the user to take advantage of the traditional uses made possible by fixed routers.

Streaming (HD) video and playing online will be possible without too many questions.

Although compact, the M5 still comes with a Gigabit Ethernet port in case you want to connect a wired device (PC, NAS, etc.). A 2.4-inch color touch screen still occupies the top side of the M5 to display essential information (data usage, time, date, etc.) and to allow access to the main settings, such as SSID and password.

The rest of the configuration and daily maintenance can be done from a dedicated application called Netgear Mobile.

The Nighthawk M5 is expected to be available in the second half of 2020 for a price that has yet to be determined.
