Police said an adult and two children were in hospital “believed to be in a critical condition”.

Authorities have since confirmed an 11-year-old girl also tragically lost her life in the crash which left the helicopter a mangled wreck in a street inside Broome’s industrial area.

“An adult and a child remain in hospital, each in a critical condition,” a police spokesman said.

John — a witness — said: “First there was a helicopter noise, and then I hear the crash”.

Police told the Broome Advertiser one person had died by the time emergency services were on the scene and other passengers were being rushed to Broome Hospital.

Police said the helicopter was taking off when an “issue occurred” early in the air at about 2.25pm.

The chopper is understood to have taken off from Horizontal Falls Seaplane Adventures’ property in Bilingurr.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said investigators were preparing to deploy to the accident site from the ATSB’s Perth and Brisbane offices.

“Once on site, investigators will examine the wreckage and accident site,” the ATSB said in a statement.

“The ATSB will also analyse available recorded data and interview witnesses.

“A final report will be released at the conclusion of the investigation. However, should a critical safety issue be identified during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify relevant parties so appropriate safety action can be taken.”

A street in Bilingurr, a suburb north of Broome, was blocked off by a Broome Fire and Rescue engine this afternoon.
